Your first sentence

How
01
Download Murmur.zip and unzip it.
02
Drag Murmur into Applications and open it.
03
On first launch, allow Microphone and Accessibility. Accessibility is what lets it put text at your cursor.
04
Put the cursor in any text field, tap right ⌘ and say a sentence.
05
Tap right ⌘ again and the text appears at the cursor. You can also hold it while you talk and let go when you finish.
You need
macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon. You can dictate without signing in, one language at a time.

Prompt skills

What it is
When you dictate a request in AI coding and AI chat tools, the cleaned-up text goes in first. If Murmur can tell what kind of request it is, up to three steps are added after it.
What lands

The plain cleanup always lands. Up to three steps are added after a blank line only when all of these hold:

  • The sentence is at least 40 characters long.
  • It reads as one single kind of request (nothing is added when it reads as two or more, or as none).
  • You have not already said how to approach it, for example “don’t change anything yet”, “just explain” or “fix it while you’re there”.

Otherwise only the cleanup lands. Sentences under 15 characters or words skip the skill. Nothing is added when cleanup fails or when translating.

Twelve skills

Seven coding skills: Fix a bug, Build a feature, Change or refactor code, Explain code, Review code, Plan the work, Write tests.

Five chat skills: Research, Write, Decide, Summarize, Reply.

AI coding tools get the seven coding skills. AI chat tools can use all twelve. Other apps recognised as an AI assistant get the five chat skills. Prompt skills do not run in terminals.

The skills page shows what the skills do and lists all twelve by name. You can also paste a sentence there to try it.

How to use
In those apps and web pages, press the dictation key as usual and say the request. Web pages need “Cleanup by scene” on. The result lands at your cursor. There is no extra key.
Where
Off by default. Turn it on in Settings → Cleanup → Prompt skills. A confirmation page comes first. Each of the twelve skills has its own switch on the same card. While it is off, the recording bar tells you once where to turn it on, the first time you say a long enough sentence in one of these apps.

Once it is on, the transcript of a long enough sentence is sent one more time to the same model vendor that cleanup uses. No new recipient is added, no audio is sent, and the window you are in is not sent. When cleanup is set to leave text alone, the skill sends nothing either.

Settings → Cleanup → Prompt skills

Off by default. A confirmation page comes first.

Cleanup by scene

What it is
The cleanup tone follows the app and field you dictate into. Email reads like email, chat stays casual, and the terminal and code editors keep their terms.
How to use

Dictate as usual, with no extra key. The card shows which scene the front app is recognised as, and you can set a scene for one app.

When cleanup is set to leave text alone, this does nothing.

Where
On by default. Settings → Cleanup → Cleanup by scene.

It reads the app identifier and the field type, plus the page host name in supported browsers. The host name is not sent. The scene name goes with the cleanup request to the cleanup model.

The Cleanup by scene card in Settings, switched on. Front app: Mail, recognised as Email. Below, a scene per app: Mail, Safari and Terminal are all set to Auto.
The card shows which scene the front app is recognised as.

Install the input method

What it is
A Pinyin input method for the Mac that comes with Murmur. It shares one vocabulary with dictation. Requires macOS 26 or later.
How to use
01
Open Settings → Input Method and click Install on the Input method card. No password.
02
Check the input menu in the menu bar. If it already lists Murmur, use it. If not, log out once and log back in.
03
Still missing after logging back in: open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources, click +, and add Murmur under Simplified Chinese.
04
Press ⌃Space, or choose Murmur in the input menu, and type a sentence.
Where
Settings → Input Method → the Input method card. Update and Uninstall are on the same card. Uninstall keeps your words, dictionary and settings.
Murmur candidate bar: ni hao, candidates 1 你好 2 尼好 3 拟好 4 泥好 5 妮好
After switching to Murmur, typing ni hao shows this candidate bar.

Typing Pinyin

What it is
The basic keys of Murmur Pinyin.
How to use
01
Type Pinyin and a row of five candidates appears. Press 1–5 to pick one, or Space for the first.
02
Wrong word? Within 1.5 seconds, press Delete once. The whole word turns back into Pinyin. A second Delete deletes Pinyin as usual.
03
Tap Shift once for English, again for Chinese. Caps Lock on also means English.
04
Mix languages: okl gives OK了. zhegeapphaoyong gives 这个app好用.
05
- and = turn pages. A punctuation key commits the highlighted candidate plus the mark. Return commits the raw Pinyin.
Where
It works as soon as you switch to Murmur. There is no switch for it. Delete to undo does not work in Chromium-based apps.
After a word commits: a number picks the Nth suggestion. Space does not pick a suggestion; it types a space as usual. Esc hides the row.

Double and fuzzy pinyin

What it is
Double pinyin: two keys per character, one for the initial and one for the final. Fuzzy pinyin: a pair of sounds you mix up, such as z and zh, works both ways.
How to use

Pick a double pinyin layout and type as usual. The candidate bar still shows full pinyin. After switching, the input method takes a few seconds to get ready.

With z ⇄ zh on, typing zongguo also gives 中国. Every extra pair makes whole sentences slightly less accurate, so tick only the ones you really mix up.

Where
Settings → Input Method → Pinyin style and fuzzy pinyin. Full Pinyin is the default; Flypy and Ziranma double pinyin are the other two. Fuzzy pinyin has nine pairs, all off by default.
The fuzzy pinyin part of Settings: nine pairs, z⇄zh, c⇄ch, s⇄sh, n⇄l, l⇄r, an⇄ang, en⇄eng, in⇄ing and f⇄h, none ticked. Above is a note on double pinyin; below, a note that a ticked pair works both ways.
The fuzzy pinyin part of the card. All nine pairs are off by default.

Smart punctuation and URLs

What it is
Punctuation rules in the input method, plus URL and email pass-through.
How to use
01
Full-width punctuation in Chinese. After digits, . and : stay half-width, so 3.14 and 10:30 need no switch to English.
02
Two periods in a row make an ellipsis. Underscore types a dash.
03
When you type www., http or an email address, that stretch goes through as English. No candidates, nothing learned.
04
With the emoji panel on, : followed by pinyin gives emoji, and ; followed by pinyin gives symbols.
Where
Settings → Input Method → Smart input. Each rule has its own switch. Off by default: pairing brackets and quotes, a space between Chinese and English, and the emoji panel. The rest are on.
The Smart input card in Settings. Under smart punctuation: full-width punctuation in Chinese, pair brackets and quotes, half-width . and : after digits, two periods make an ellipsis, underscore types a dash, space between Chinese and English or digits. Then URL and email pass-through, and the emoji and symbol panel. Pairing, spacing and the emoji panel are unticked.
The Smart input card. Each rule has its own switch. The three unticked rules are off by default.

Candidate window

What it is
The size, accent colour and direction of the candidate window.
How to use

Three sizes: Small, Standard, Large. Five accent colours: Coral, Blue, Green, Purple, Graphite.

Horizontal or vertical. In the vertical layout each candidate gets its own line, and long ones wrap instead of being cut off. Light and dark follow the system appearance.

Where
Settings → Input Method → Candidate window look. Standard, Coral and horizontal are the defaults. The card has a preview, and changes apply right away with no restart.
The candidate window preview in Settings: shu ru fa, candidates 1 输入法 2 书入法 3 数入法 4 输入 5 书, with the second one highlighted.
The preview on the Candidate window card, with the defaults: standard size, coral, horizontal.

Cloud candidates

What it is
For long input, the cloud suggests one whole-sentence candidate. It is a preview for now.
How to use

There is a fixed cloud slot at the end of the candidate bar. A request is sent only when you click it or press ⌥↩.

The result fills the same slot. Click it or press ⌥↩ again to commit. It takes no number key and never commits by itself. It does not work in password fields or in apps on the deny list.

Where
Off by default. Sign-in required. Turn it on in Settings → Input Method → Cloud candidates (preview). A confirmation page comes first. "Request automatically when I pause" is also off by default.

Once this is on, the pinyin you have not committed yet is sent to the Murmur server and passed on to a third-party model service to guess the whole sentence; what you are typing can be inferred from it. Text you have already committed, your personal lexicon and which app you are in are not sent. After you turn it off, no new requests are sent; what has already been sent cannot be taken back.

The text next to the switch in Settings.

Shortcut phrases

What it is
The input method and dictation each keep their own list. The two lists are separate and never mix.
How to use

When typing. Write your own “code → phrase”, e.g. dz → your address. Type the code in Murmur Pinyin and the phrase is the first candidate.

When speaking. In dictation, say the trigger phrase on its own and the whole template goes in. If you say even one extra word, it does not count as a match.

Where

Input method: Settings → Input Method → Dictionary · Words I've typed (learned by the input method) → Manage shortcut phrases.

Dictation: the Dictionary page in the main window sidebar, Snippets card.

dz → your address

Input method phrases: type the code, the phrase is the first candidate.

Words you type

What it is
Words the input method learns. They are stored on this Mac. On by default. Nothing typed in a password field is recorded.
How to use

When you dictate, these words go with the recognition request as hints, same as the dictionary. If you choose offline recognition, they stay on your Mac.

When you press ⌥⇧Space for the AI cleanup card, the words the sentence touches go with that request, at most 500. This happens with offline recognition too.

Words do not sync between devices in this version.

Where

Settings → Input Method → Dictionary · Words I've typed (learned by the input method). Switch off "Learn the words I type" to stop learning. Switch off "Let AI use my own words" and the AI cleanup card sends none.

To clear them: Settings → System → Clear data.

~/Library/Application Support/Murmur/lexicon.sqlite

Words you type are stored here. See the privacy page.
